Parties position themselves and others within their evolving stories based upon a subjective and loosely defined set of rights, duties, and obligations. Since conflict is interactive and dynamic, the parties’ stories are continually evolving as they engage in conversation during mediation. These stories provide the meaning that influences the parties’ actions. This session provides a framework for identifying and analyzing these evolving story lines, positions, and speech acts. The presenters will examine techniques for mediators to help the parties expand their limited story lines and move forward.
